You’re looking for a 9mm that’s comfortable to carry all day, but still has the heft and features you want for reliable home defense or a day at the range. The CZ P-01 fits that bill for a lot of folks around here. It’s a compact pistol originally designed for law enforcement and military use, but its size and lighter weight make it a capable everyday carry option for many Montanans.
How it Works
The P-01 features a decocker, which lets you safely lower the hammer with a flick of your thumb – a preference for some over a manual safety. Once decocked, the first shot is a heavier double-action pull, followed by lighter, crisp single-action shots. The aluminum alloy frame keeps the weight down without sacrificing durability, and the pistol feels substantial in hand.
Built to Last
CZ upgraded their manufacturing process with the P-01, and those improvements have carried over to other models. This means parts are consistently made to the same specs, so you don’t have to worry about individual fitting – replacements or upgrades are straightforward. The P-01 was put through extensive testing and ultimately replaced the CZ 75 used by the Czech National Police, so it’s proven to hold up under demanding use.

Reliability Numbers
CZ put this pistol through serious testing. The U.S. Army requires 9mm pistols to function for at least 495 rounds between failures. The CZ P-01 averaged 7 stoppages in 15,000 rounds during testing – a failure rate of just .05%, or over 2142 rounds between issues.
For a long time, the P-01 had a NATO Stock Number (NSN) engraved on the frame, meaning it met NATO standards. Recent production runs may not include the NSN, but the quality remains the same.
