Montana does not require a state permit to purchase, a firearm registration or a waiting period. When you buy from a licensed dealer you fill out federal Form 4473 and show a current government photo ID, and the dealer runs the check through the FBI's NICS system, since Montana is not a point-of-contact state. Federal law sets the age limits at the dealer counter: 21 for a handgun and 18 for a rifle or shotgun. You must not be a prohibited person under state or federal law. Since 2021 Montana law lets anyone who is eligible to possess a firearm under state or federal law carry concealed without a permit (MCA 45-8-316). Open carry is also lawful for eligible adults. The Flathead County Sheriff still issues concealed weapon permits to residents 18 and older with six months of Montana residency and proof of a safety course; state law sets the fee at $50, valid for five years. A permit helps when you travel to states that honor it and in restricted government buildings. Carry is still barred in school buildings and in federal facilities.
For 2026, Montana FWP lists the deer and elk archery season as Sept. 5 to Oct. 18, a two-day youth deer hunt Oct. 15 to 16, and the general season Oct. 24 to Nov. 29, with earlier openers in backcountry HDs 150, 280 and 316. Rifles, handguns, shotguns with slugs or 0/00 buckshot, muzzleloaders, bows and crossbows are lawful, and FWP sets no caliber or magazine limit for game animals. Some areas are weapons restriction areas limited to shotguns, muzzleloaders or traditional handguns. Firearm hunters must wear 400 square inches of hunter orange above the waist.
