A used Marlin 1895SS lever-action in .45/70 Gov't, made in 1994 and JM stamped, serial 061116. The 22-inch Micro-Groove barrel has a bright bore with excellent rifling. Sights are a flip-up rear and a post front. The finish is rated very good with slight wear along the barrel, and the walnut stock and forend are also very good, with some minor red staining near the butt from the stock pad.

The 1895 in .45/70 is a close-range elk and deer rifle, and the 22-inch barrel version balances well for carrying through the Montana general season, Oct. 24 to Nov. 29. FWP puts no caliber limit on firearms used for game animals, and the flip-up rear sight gives the hunter a quick iron-sight picture without a scope. Rifle hunters must wear 400 square inches of hunter orange above the waist, and some districts are weapons restriction areas, so check the rule where you hunt.
