Japanese Shin Shinto Period Katana

A Japanese katana attributed to the Shin Shinto period, with a 26.5-inch blade that shows a mottled patina rather than a fresh polish. The tang is mumei, meaning it carries no smith's signature, and it is of its original length, so the blade has not been shortened. The handle, or tsuka, has lost its silk wrapping.

This is a sword for a Montana collector or student of Japanese blades who wants an original-length, unaltered example to study or restore. The missing wrap and the patina are stated plainly by the supplier; neither has been dressed up, and both leave room for a careful owner to have the handle rewrapped and the blade assessed by a polisher. It is sold used and listed under parts and accessories because it is not a firearm. Handle it with the respect an old edge deserves and store it dry.
