A U.S. Model 1840 musket by D.S. Nippes, converted to percussion with the Maynard tape-priming system. In 1848 and 1849 Nippes altered or newly built about 2,000 of these, and most, this one included, began as Nippes flintlocks. The mechanism takes either a Maynard primer tape or an ordinary percussion cap. The 42-inch round .69 caliber smooth-bore barrel has a fine bore, is marked U.S. over NWP over a circled P at the breech, and carries an 1845 tang date. The lock reads MILL over CREEK over PA over 1842; the tape unit is marked EDWARD MAYNARD over PATENTEE over 1845.
All the metal shows an even bright-gray patina. The stock is excellent with no cracks or chips, two strong cartouches and the stocker's initials on the left flat; swivels and ramrod are present, and the action and tape primer both work. A fitted U.S. Model 1835-40 bayonet comes with it. This is a complete antique musket for a Montana collector of U.S. martial arms, not a part or ammunition.
