Ottoman Palaska Cartridge Box, Possible Greek Origin

A palaska, the cartridge box carried across the Ottoman Empire, dating to around the 19th century and measuring 4 1/2 inches wide by 4 inches tall. This example is thought to be Greek in origin. The front and both sides are engraved with a floral pattern, while the top lid has lost the decoration it once carried. The supplier calls it a very good representative piece of regional Ottoman military kit, and it is sold used.

It is a container, not ammunition, so the listing category is loose. The box went on a belt and held a fighter's cartridges, and today it is a display piece for a Montana collector of Ottoman or Balkan arms, or a companion to an Ottoman-pattern long gun or pistol. The missing lid decoration keeps it an honest study example, and the engraved floral work on the surviving faces gives it plenty to look at in a case.
